Introduction

I bea r witnes s tha t ther e i s non e worth y o f worshi p excep t Alla h alone , wh o ha s n o partner , th e One , Wh o Subdues , th e Generous , th e Forgiving . I bea r witnes s tha t ou r leade r Muhamma d i s Hi s servan t an d Messenger , Hi s belove d an d dea r one , th e bes t o f al l creation . H e wa s honoure d wit h th e Gloriou s Qur’a n tha t ha s bee n a n endurin g miracl e throughou t th e years . H e wa s als o sen t wit h hi s guidin g Sunna h tha t show s th e wa y fo r thos e wh o see k guidance . Ou r leade r Muhamma d ha s bee n particularise d wit h th e characteristi c o f eloquen t an d pith y speech , an d simplicit y an d eas e i n th e religion . Ma y th e peac e an d blessing s o f Alla h b e upo n him , th e othe r Prophet s an d Messengers , al l o f thei r familie s an d th e res t o f th e righteous .

T o proceed : w e hav e narrated , throug h man y chain s ( isnad , pl . asaneed ) an d variou s narrations , fro m Al i ib n Abe e Talib , Abdulla h ib n Masood , Muad h ib n Jabal , Ab u ad-Darda , [Abdullah ] ib n Umar , [Abdullah ] ib n Abbas , Ana s ib n Malik , Ab u Hurayra h an d Ab u Sa’ee d al-Khudre e ma y Alla h b e please d wit h al l o f the m tha t th e Messenge r o f Alla h (peac e an d blessing s o f Alla h b e upo n him ) said , “Whoeve r preserve s fo r m y umma h fort y hadeeth relate d t o th e religion , Alla h wil l the n resurrec t hi m i n th e compan y o f th e piou s an d th e scholars. Anothe r narratio n states : “Alla h wil l rais e hi m a s a n erudit e an d learne d scholar. I n th e narratio n fro m Ab u ad-Darda , i t i s stated : “O n th e Da y o f Resurrection , I wil l b e a n intercesso r an d witnes s fo r him. I n th e narratio n fro m Ib n Masoo d i t i s state d tha t th e Prophe t (peac e an d blessing s o f Alla h b e upo n him ) said , “I t wil l b e sai d t o hi m ‘Ente r Paradis e throug h an y doo r yo u wish. I n th e narratio n fro m Ib n Umar , on e find s th e words : “H e wil l b e recorde d amon g th e compan y o f th e scholar s an d wil l b e resurrecte d i n th e compan y o f th e martyrs. [However, ] th e scholar s o f hadeet h agre e that , althoug h thi s hadeet h ha s numerou s chains , i t i s wea k [i.e. , dae’ef , an d henc e canno t b e use d a s a Shareea h proof] .

The n cam e al-Hasa n ib n Sufya n an-Nasa’ee , Ab u Bak r al-Aajurree , Ab u Bak r Muhamma d ib n Ibrahee m al-Asfahanee , ad-Daraqutnee , al-Hakim , Ab u Nu’aim , Ab u Abdur-Rahma n as-Sulamee , Ab u Sa’ee d al-Maleenee , Ab u ’Uthmaa n as-Saboonee , Abdulla h ib n Muhamma d al-Ansaree , Ab u Bak r al-Baihaqe e an d countles s other s bot h fro m th e earlie r an d late r times .

I hav e turne d t o Alla h fo r guidanc e an d praye d t o Hi m whil e compilin g thes e fort y hadeeth , followin g th e exampl e o f thos e imam s an d guardian s o f Islam . Th e scholar s hav e agree d tha t i t i s permissibl e t o ac t i n accordanc e wit h wea k hadeet h tha t dea l wit h th e virtue s o f goo d deed s [i.e. , no t wea k hadeet h tha t dea l wit h ruling s ahka m o r act s o f worship] . Nonetheless , give n tha t fact , I hav e no t simpl y relie d upo n tha t [weak ] hadeet h [mentione d above] , i n compilin g thi s work . Instead , I a m followin g th e statemen t o f th e Prophe t (peac e an d blessing s o f Alla h b e upo n him) , foun d i n a n authenti c hadeeth , “Le t hi m wh o wa s presen t amon g yo u infor m thos e wh o ar e absent. I n fact , eac h hadeet h i s b y itsel f a grea t genera l precep t fro m th e foundation s o f th e religion . Som e scholar s stat e tha t al l o f Isla m revolve s aroun d thes e hadeeth . Som e hav e said , abou t a particula r hadeeth , tha t the y ar e one-hal f o f Islam , one-thir d o f Isla m an d s o forth .

Hadeeth 1

O n th e authorit y o f amee r ul - muminee n (th e commande r o f th e faithful) , ab u haf s Uma r ib n al-Khatta b (ma y Alla h b e please d wit h him) , wh o said :

I hear d th e Messenge r o f Alla h (peac e an d blessing s o f Alla h b e upo n him ) say , “Action s ar e bu t b y intention s an d ever y ma n shal l hav e onl y tha t whic h h e intended . Thu s h e whos e migratio n ( hijra h fro m Makka h t o Madina ) wa s fo r Alla h an d Hi s Messenger , hi s migratio n wa s fo r Alla h an d Hi s Messenger , an d h e whos e migratio n wa s t o achiev e som e worldl y benefi t o r t o tak e som e woma n i n marriage , hi s migratio n wa s fo r tha t fo r whic h h e migrated.

I t i s relate d b y th e tw o imam s o f th e scholar s o f hadeeth , Ab u Abdulla h Muhamma d ib n Ismae l ib n Ibrahee m ib n al-Mugheer a ib n Bardizba h al-Bukhar i an d Abu-l-Husai n Musli m ib n al-Hajja j ib n Musli m al-Qushaire e an-Naisaboree , i n thei r tw o Saheehs , whic h ar e th e soundes t o f compile d book s [i.e. , th e mos t truthfu l book s afte r th e Boo k o f Allah , sinc e th e Qur’a n i s no t ‘compiled’] .
